Why not make a diet enjoyable and, at the same time, find out what we might be eating that is taking a toll on our health? My allergist, Dr. Welman A. Shrader, prescribes a diet that eliminates most of the foods to which people are allergic. By avoiding them for a month, you eradicate the toxins from your system. You will know if you are feeling better within ten days, so a little patience, please. Then, after a month, you can reintroduce one category of foods at a time to see if your symptoms return and thereby know which food is the culprit -- a sort of "Do-It-Yourself-Allergy-Kit"!
First, what you MAY EAT: 1) All Vegetables, including tomatoes and avocados. (Canned tomatoes are okay if they contain no sugar.) 2) Some Grains and whole Grains (except Wheat or Rye) -- such as brown rice, oats, corn, corn tortillas, etc. 3) White Potatoes 4) Meats, Eggs, Fish and Fowl (see exceptions in "don'ts") 5) Olive Oil or Flax Seed Oil 6) Nuts, Seeds, Legumes - not processed 7) Wheat-free Pasta, with no sugar or yeast added 8) Fresh herb seasonings and spices are okay 9) Sea Salt, non-iodized You can eat VERY WELL on the above! Now, the foods TO BE AVOIDED TOTALLY: 1) All Sugars, including honey, maple syrup, sweeteners of any kind 2) Fruits and Fruit Juices. Fresh Lemon Juice used only as a flavoring agent. 3) Dairy products, including cow or goat milk, all cheeses, yogurt, sourcream, etc. 4) Wheat or Rye 5) Coffee and Teas, and anything with caffeine 6) Alcoholic beverages, including "non-alcoholic" beers 7) Yeast and anything containing yeast 8) Fermented and preserved foods, including anything made with Vinegar, Soy Sauce, Pickles, Olives, Tofu, bottled salad dressings. 9) Processed and Smoked Meats, including sausage or hamburger if not made fresh by your butcher 10) Foods apt to be moldy and all packaged "junk" foods 11) Mushrooms 12) Margarine, cooking oils except Extra-Virgin Olive Oil 13) Food Additives, including MSG 14) Most Processed or Packaged Foods: read the list of ingredients carefully 15) Vitamins and minerals unless specifically labeled "yeast free" 16) Birth control pills, antibiotics or cortisone You should try breaking the caffeine or alcohol habit for a week before you start on this diet to take care of any withdrawal symptoms.
